A SPIRITED LADY
Susan Smalley, 48, of Belmont in County Durham is a businesswoman with a rather unusual gift. As well providing business and life coaching services she is a spiritualist medium.
As a child Susan lived in Sherburn Village, near Durham City. The eldest of three siblings, she was aware from an early age that she had a very special gift. She could see the spirits of the departed.
“One of my earliest memories of encountering spirit is when I woke up one morning to see an elderly gentleman standing at the foot of my bed. He was as real as can be, not ghostly in any way. It wasn’t a dream or anything like that. After a few moments this old chap just gradually faded from view. “And then I pulled the blanket over my head!” “Another occasion I heard a knock at the back door of our home and when I opened it there stood a gentleman in a suit and wearing a trilby” there was a particular strange feeling within me as I looked at his wide white smile and I screamed”. “He completely disappeared!”
As Susan reached adolescence she experienced an increasing amount of paranormal phenomena, hearing and seeing spirits on an almost daily basis. Throughout her marriage, from the age of 19, however, there appeared to be a quelling of this phenomena and experience. Her marriage ended when she was 28 and due to the extreme emotional upset that ensued, it was then that her clairaudience very strongly heard a gentlemans voice calling her name. She looked around her in the kitchen and no one was present. Susan then sensed and heard a woman speaking to her, in a comforting fashion, to bring reassurance to her that all would be well.
During this period Susan felt drawn to learn about psychic ability. For the next ten years, Susan read about psychic experiences, learned how to meditate in groups with other like minded people, and studied the Tarot, which unlocked even further her clairvoyance. She did not enter a spiritualist church until 1998 and it was then that she sought as much information as possible about the history of mediumship and the mechanics of that gift. She understood that she had a natural ability and wished to further educate herself in order to educate others. In developing as a medium she has one purpose borne in mind, and that is to help others.
Susan didn’t know it but she was embarking on a journey during which she would develop her clairvoyant abilities and have one aim in mind. She wanted to provide verifiable evidence that she really was communicating with the departed.
“I read hundreds of books but the one that is always close to my heart is Listen My Son by Hunter Selkirk. He was a gifted North East Medium in the early years of the 20th Century.”
For the past ten years Susan has been a regular student at the Arthur Findlay College, in Stansted, Essex, and in April 2010 she attended a course in psychic development with Tony Stockwell, of TV’s The Psychic Detective.
“I had been asked to deliver an inspired philosophy on Spiritualism as part of my course study assessment by Tony Stockwell upon the third day of attendance at the college. All other students were sitting there in the room and Tony was sat making his observations and noting them from the back of the Lecture Room. After which he approached me, turned and said “it is not often anyone wows me, but you wowed me” he smiled then said “you are a natural public speaker, and it was excellent”. I was silently over the moon with his comments and replied to him simply “thank you, I appreciate that Tony”.
Tony Stockwell teaches at the Arthur Findlay College and overseas as well as all across the UK and is highly respected by Susan.
She says “Spiritualism is a recognised religion. Over recent years, however, there has been a tendency, I think, for some high profile people to turn mediumship into a showbiz event. This h
as given the rest of us a bad name. I want to put the record straight. Mediumship is a natural ability and enhanced only by true dedication, education, and discipline, at all times with humility is paramount.”
Susan has given demonstrations of her mediumship at Spiritualist churches across the North-East and during the past ten years, and has been able to give some highly evidential messages.
“Mediums work on different levels; all mediums are psychic, yet not all psychics are mediums. There are three main attributes the way in which communication, some mediums are clairaudient, which means they hear Spirit; others are clairvoyant, so they see Spirit. There is also clairsentient, which means you sense Spirit.
“I am very lucky in that I am clairaudient, clairvoyant and clairsentient. When a spirit comes to me it’s like, how I can describe this … the information will appear visually, and show me, it’s like a film of their life upon the screen of my mind (subjectively) or upon an energy build up in space before me (outside my mind – objectively).
“One evening I was giving a demonstration of mediumship in Darlington. I was standing at the lectern and since I had a cold, put a tissue down on the lecturn, should I require it. I kept looking at this tissue, I was irresistibly drawn to look at it. Then I was drawn to this chap in the front row of the auditorium and asked, ‘Excuse me sir but I can’t help being drawn to look at my tissue? can you understand a name that sounds like tissue?’
“Well, this gentleman just looked startled. ‘Yes, he said, ‘I have a Polish aunt called Matissue”. The congregation broke into laughter and the energies were raised even higher to work within. Spirit do have to use any which way they can to work with the medium who is conveying the message as evidentially as possible. A working medium, really does have to work at it. The message and evidence does not always come easy.
“In July this year I attended, with several other mediums, an event at St. James’ Park. The spirit of a young man came through for his girlfriend who was sat before me. He described how he’d been killed in a road accident, which was the young girl validated as being correct.
“On another occasion, at the Spiritualist church in Philadelphia (the one near Birtley, not in the USA!), a man came through for a relative and told me he was her Dad, he told me that he had been killed whilst drilling into a wall with an electric drill. He’d hit an electric cable and was electrocuted. The relative was amazed because that is exactly how her loved one had passed away.”
“Just recently, whilst working at a Sunday Divine Service in Sunderland SNU Church, I felt a man communicate with me clairsentiently, I could feel he had been killed and yet also I could see above the heads of those in the congregation, a scene like a movie screen, where a man was being chased by gangsters down a street - it was a murder. This poor man was killed during a knife attack. Someone had been arrested and the case closed but the spirit of the murdered man told me that the police had arrested the wrong person and that the case would be re-opened.”
“The President of this church, Steve, who happened to be Chairing for me that night, indicated to me that he could in fact verify this communication, as he knew of the killing and knew that the this case had indeed been re-opened.”
“I do get glimpses of the Spiritual Realm. There are many different levels to it. The place into which we pass immediately after our physical death is very similar to life here on earth because it is what we are used to.
“But as you move away from this plain of existence, the environment changes and becomes much more, well, indescribable, beautiful but strange and wondrous. I would describe God as Living Light; an awesome entity that is pure, living, loving light.”
